The person responsible
for this Homeless Drive is a 4 ft 11in. Jewish woman, the mother of
two sons. She and her Sons Marc and Cory have been feeding the
homeless for the past 20 years. Her parents taught her that "if you
have more than you need give the rest away. To always be on the
receiving end is a very shallow existence, but to help others is the
real essence of living."
She recalled as a
child visiting Washington D.C. with her mother and having a life
changing experience. Seeing a homeless man in the snow sitting on
the cement, leaning against a building; her mother insisted Linda
give him her hat, gloves, scarf. Although the items were small the
significance was tremendous. Years later a television show
describing an 11 year old boy's mission to feed people living on the
streets inspired Linda to follow suit. She established ongoing
programs to send homeless children to camp, massive holiday dinners
for 2000, yearly collection drives and emergency deliveries.
We were part of her
22nd year Homeless Drive effort. We were part of the 100 volunteers
helping out at the sorting station at Riva Road and part of the 50
volunteers helping out with the deliveries on Xmas eve. It was an
amazing big operation. It all started out with a 4 ft 11in woman
handing out the lunches in DC with her sons in the back seat of her
car 20 some years ago !
